Based in Los Angeles, now financially independent, Meghan and Harry are now flying on their own wings. Less than a year after the announcement of the megxit, the Sussex family is getting more and more divorced from the royal family every day.
What is today the real state of the relations between Prince Harry, now settled in Los Angeles with his wife Meghan Markle and their son Archie, and the royal family? In deciding to relinquish a prominent royal role last January, Prince Charles’ youngest son laid the foundation stone for an inevitable break-up. Eight months later, the Sussex not only put thousands of miles between themselves and England, but they are gradually cutting all the threads that link them to the monarchy. Starting with their financial dependence on the crown.
Meghan Markle and Prince Harry announced this week that they have repaid in full the £2.4 million committed to the renovation of their home at Frogmore Cottage. While they have been paying a fixed sum each month to date, the slate is now clean.
According to a source told The Telegraph, the couple also waived Prince Charles’ private financial contribution to help them during that first year. While many mocked their inability to be independent, Meghan and Harry are now silencing their grief. No doubt the ambitious multi-million dollar contract signed with Netflix this week has played a big part in the revelations of recent days.
The divorce is now finalized
As Royal expert Richard Kay notes in the Daily Mail, this decision in a way confirms the definitive separation from the monarchy. “It signals that their divorce from Britain is permanent, and also totally destroys the idea that they might still have a role in the royal family in the future,” the expert analyses.
At the time of the megxit, Queen Elizabeth and the Sussex had agreed on a transitional period running until March 2021 to facilitate a gradual emancipation. While the couple now flies on its own wings and no longer depends on the crown, the break is well and truly consummated.
Far from London, Meghan and Harry work every day to build a life that is like them, even if it means turning their backs on those who once gave them so much.
