Kate, William, Charles, Camilla: What does the royal family do on New Year’s Eve?

Every year, members of the British Royal Family enjoy celebrating New Year’s Eve in Sandringham, Berkshire or Balmoral. Closer explains it all.

This year, 2020, the festive season has a special flavor. Due to the continuing global health crisis and pandemic, everyone’s Christmas and New Year’s celebrations have had to be rethought. Exceptionally, Queen Elizabeth II decided to spend Christmas in Windsor, alone with her husband Prince Philip.

The 94-year-old Queen of England preferred to break with tradition and not go to her castle in Sandringham, Norfolk. As for Prince William and Kate Middleton, they celebrated with their three children at Anmer Hall, far away from Prince Harry and Meghan Markle who were in Montecito, California, with little Archie.

Normally, Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip stay in Sandringham for New Year’s Eve until February 6th each year, an important date because it is the anniversary of the death of the Sovereign’s father, King George VI. Traditionally, the Queen of England invites all members of the Royal Family to celebrate with her and Prince Philip, especially those who could not be there for Christmas.

Therefore, it is usually at Sandringham that Prince William and Kate Middleton spend the New Year, with their children Princesses George, Louis and Princess Charlotte.

The Cambridge in Berkshire, Charles at Balmoral

However, for the 2019 celebrations, the Cambridge couple had decided to spend New Year’s Eve at Kate Middleton‘s family home in Berkshire. As for the Sussex couple, they had spent the holiday season in Canada, away from curious eyes and the British press, especially since it was their son’s first New Year’s Eve.

As for Prince Charles and Camilla Parker Bowles, the couple has been celebrating New Year’s Eve at their beloved Birkhall residence in Balmoral since 2005. It was from this location that the couple conveyed their greetings to the British on December 16th.
